But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years.

White had worked with Leo in the very early days of Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company as the plant manager and stayed on after the company was sold to the CBS Corporation , but had grown unhappy with their management. Tom Walker worked as a sales rep at Fender. Because of a year non-compete clause in the contract that sold the Fender companies to CBS, Leo Fender was a silent partner.
The name of this partnership was changed to Musitek, Inc. In , the company started producing its first product, an amplifier designed by Leo Fender and Tom Walker called the “Sixty Five”. It was a hybrid of tube and solid state technology.

If you’re looking for an easy to play guitar, the action doesn’t get any lower than this baby. Excellent value and quality that’s typical of Korea today. This model was only made in one small run so there aren’t many of these around – most of the Harm 3 models feature the cats eye f-hole in a semi-hollow design while this model was a limited edition production model that’s no longer available. It features a solid archtop mahogany body, 22 fret maple set-neck with ebony fretboard and synthetic bone nut, side markers on the side of fretboard only, jumbo frets, flat The setup on this guitar is superb and the tone is warm and rich, very good choice for anything besides metal.

Before Lexicon started building good quality Asian units, they were made in the USA and, although mid-priced for Lexicon the sound quality is similar to the expensive PCM
Not Peggy Lee Format: Only tracks featuring Peggy Lee are listed above in other words, not the full track listing. In its heyday, this track album was a treasure trove of debuting masters. Seven tracks were making their very first commercial appearance. It should be noted, in passing, that this album has a companion piece, titled Benny Goodman Presents Fletcher Henderson Arrangements.
The two albums share the same release history, but the Fletcher Henderson item does not concern us here, because Peggy Lee is not featured in it. Concerned about various suspicious details in the data at my reach, I embarked on a search for additional information that eventually proved worthwhile, resulting as it did in numerous corrections of the originally supplied data.
Below I have explained the various matters that turned out to need modification or clarification. Other sources list it as CL It turns out that both listings are correct. The album was issued twice, with the same artwork and track listing but different prefixes GL, CL and different colors for the label of the vinyl black in the GL version, red in the CL version: GL came out first.

Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly. Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia.
This is their story.
Superb playing axe with a HSS configuration for an excellent choice of humbucker or single coil tones.
Finally the perfect Les Paul Over the years Gibson has tried so many different things on LP’s but they finally built the perfect one for me and probably for you too. Let me run it down: Read complete review Over the years Gibson has tried so many different things on LP’s but they finally built the perfect one for me and probably for you too. The reason LP’s always had killer sustain is the thick mahogany body has tons of resonance.
IMO the best neck they’ve ever made. Thin and very fast. BB3 can cover glassy cleans through thrash metal. The 57 classic is so smooth and produces really thick smooth creamy distortion. One of my faves is toggle switch in middle position, neck pup with knob pulled, bridge pup knob normal. I use that to play Lenny and it’s as sweet and glassy as the finest strat.
Satin finish on back – Very fast finish.

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good.

Basswood has long been favoured by jazz musicians and it can also help to balance a bright punchy maple neck.
In fact, it was likely that your parents were steering you in the direction of accordion lessons. The Beatles — and of course others — stopped all that. Suddenly, electric guitars were 1 on every kids Christmas list. Companies that had been manufacturing Accordions for 20 years, retooled for electric guitars. EKO was at the forefront, and within 2 years they were shipping over 10, electric guitars to USA per year.
Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Rickenbacker… these were all too expensive for our parents to buy for us. Hence, the foreign guitar manufacturers gave us what we wanted.

Posted 11 February – That’s interesting you bring up the horn shape and the headstock shape. I don’t know if it has anything to do with it, but the Deluxe model and a buttload of others were made at two different factories- both Kalimazoo and Nashville. My understanding is that the Deluxe was made from almost the beginning of the Nashville coming in, but still made in ‘Kalimazzo as well at the same time. So, to me, you would think that maybe where it was made would have something to do with the ‘radically’ different shapes, but I have seen some models that I KNOW were Kalimazzo made with the point and big headstock, and the other way around.
Another great 1st Reissue, this one finished in the classic copper finish.

Although Gibson made a thin-body version T , this is the original full depth 3. Other features include The pickup has 6 adjustable poles between two Alnico 5 bar magnets, which sounds much more mellow than the P90s used in the solid body guitars.
The tone is well suited for Jazz, or even Delta blues. Cosmetically, it’s seen plenty of playing time but very presentable. The finish is checked all over, with finish wear primarily on the back of the neck and body, amd some finish chips on the headstock.

About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice.
They are analogue by nature and can’t really be replaced that easily.
He remained active until his untimely death in February His main guitar in the early years was a Les Paul acquired from Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, which he owned for more than 40 years before selling it in This is the guitar that Gary used on his best selling album Still Got The Blues, and the one he kept by his side until his death.
